To those who may know that they like this style, but maybe haven’t pin-pointed what it is about mid century modern that appeals to them, here are a few of the unique characteristics that define Mid Century Modern style:
- Geometric shapes: Most people who think of mid century modern immediately think of the classic, thin-framed, perfectly round mirror and tapered legs on furniture. What they may not realize, without over-analyzing numerous mid century designs and pieces, is that almost all classic Mid Century Modern pieces have a distinct geometrical shape or shapes. For instance – the round mirror. It is a harsh circle, with no softening of the shape. Tiered legs added to furniture create a triangle shape with a square or rectangle shape on top; no curved lines to soften and mold one distinctive shape into another. True mid century modern design follows this pattern with strong geometric shapes, which is part of what makes it feel so clean and aesthetically pleasing to those who prefer a more minimalistic design.
- Natural wood: More specifically, walnut. Whereas other similar design styles (think boho or scandinavian) also include natural woods, mid century is notorious for a darker, more retro, walnut stain. Mixing this darker wood stain with warm earth tones brings a natural cohesion with the outdoors, similar to a bohemian style, but mid century often mixes in other rich fabrics and jewel tones (i.e. caramel leather, or dark green velvet) to add more depth than airiness to its design. To those who enjoy bringing the outdoors in, but also like a little bit of depth and visual interest that can be added with bright colors, mid century modern is the style for you.
- Metal accent pieces: Specifically chrome and brass. Another key element you will often see in Mid Century Modern design is touches of metal throughout the room. Whether it be in a geometric lamp, an accent mirror, or a starburst or sputnik light fixture, chrome and brass metals are another added layer of material that gives visual flair to a mid century modern room. A little bit of natural wood, a bright accent color, geometric shapes, and a metal component or two, and you will have the perfect mid century modern room in no time.
So what are some of our favorite pieces in stock that fit perfectly into this mid century modern style? We’re glad you asked…
- This Copeland Astrid platform bed. Available in multiple colors, but classic walnut is the perfect mid century look. The tapered legs and simple rectangle headboard create clean geometric shapes. This is the epitome of a truly mid century modern style.
- This Maxidavian Esprit Sofa. Though featuring a different style of tapered legs, this sofa still holds true to a mid century modern design with clean lines and the “floating sofa” style that peg legs and tapered legs create in mid century modern styles. Additionally, the caramel leather is the perfect natural material in an earth tone to add richness and depth to a minimalistic room that could appear cold and unwelcoming without it.
- This Robert Abbey Capri Table Lamp. From the big round teardrop shape, to the bright retro 50’s/60’s color, and the chrome metal accent in the base, this lamp is just begging to find its home in your mid century modern living room. Though slightly curved versions of these shapes, you can still see a distinctive triangle with a rectangle teetering in the shape of the large teardrop base and the cylinder shaped shade.
With so many mid century modern pieces for us to choose from, it was hard to pick just three. We encourage you to take a look at yourself at all of our inventory here online or visit us at our showrooms in Raleigh and Asheville and see which mid century modern pieces stand out to you!
